The six-factor filter
- Problem urgency: how costly, painful, frustrating, or valuable is the job?
- Buyer specificity: can you describe the buyer and context precisely?
- Evidence: do you see paid alternatives, repeated questions, workarounds, or active search?
- Access: can you realistically reach people who fit the buyer profile?
- Outcome value: can the product create a result the buyer can recognize?
- Delivery fit: can you credibly deliver the result in a format you can maintain?
Score ideas before you commit
Give each factor a 1–5 score. Do not average away a fatal weakness: an idea with a perfect delivery fit but no evidence of demand is still weak. Mark the weakest dimension and ask what test could increase confidence.
Use the Digital Product Idea Evaluator to do this automatically.
Choose format after the job is clear
If the buyer needs information and sequence, consider a guide or course. If they need faster execution, consider templates, tools, checklists, or software. If they need feedback or accountability, consider workshops, cohorts, memberships, or a productized service.
Avoid these selection traps
- “Everyone is selling templates, so I should too.”
- “I know a lot about this, therefore people will pay.”
- “The audience is huge, therefore the niche is good.”
- “Nobody sells this, therefore competition is low.”
- “People liked my post, therefore demand is validated.”
Run the cheapest meaningful test
For a new idea, your next step might be five customer conversations, a landing page with a specific CTA, a waitlist, a paid pilot, or a pre-sale. Choose the test that exposes the assumption most likely to kill the idea.
